Community united Methodist church, Shelby, montana
Welcome! My doors officially opened on
December 8th, 1902, but my beginning originated with William Wesley
Van Orsdel (Brother Van, as he was better known). During the fall of 1872,
Brother Van visited farms and ranches in the area. Following Brother Van, the
"Cowboy Preacher," Rev. A.W. Hammer came to the area and became the
first appointed pastor when I became an organized church on April 2, 1902.
Since that time I have seen many changes within the community of Shelby and
within my congregation. My current sanctuary (which you can see on this web
page) was completed in the early ‘30’s and remodeled into it’s current form in
1953. An addition of the entry, office, Wesley room, education rooms and
restrooms was completed in 1966. I have been blessed with being able to watch
children grow into young adults, marry and baptize their own children, and
grandchildren into the church. I have also been witness to the passing of many
dear friends, taking comfort in the knowledge that they are in the gentle hands
of our dear Lord. But mostly I look forward to meeting new faces as we come
together in worship and praise of God. May the new faces that pass through my
doors know that they can find comfort, friendship, support and the love of
Jesus Christ within my walls! I hope you will come and see me and join all my
dear friends who use my facilities for worship, education, prayer, fellowship,
feasts, and fun!
